The program began in Phnom Penh city and organized drug treatment/detoxification, social rehabilitation and aftercare program in order to provide the services and support to drug user and addict in Cambodia aimed to address of the social problems and such as family conflict or domestic violence, sexual abuse, HIV/AIDS vulnerability and the risk of HIV/AIDS within the community and poverty reduction.

DARAC provided treatment/detoxification to the drug addict in the DARAC treatment / detoxification center, the treatment included psychological support, education, awareness sessions for improvement of life skills and referrals. The activities were primarily carried out via one-on-one counselling, group discussions and entertainment with an aim of helping the drug addict to find out the personal solutions and enable to access their own ‘life plan through rehabilitation program, DARAC organized the social rehabilitation program to increase the ability and capacity of drug addict and after they got physical treatment/detoxification, they go through the rehabilitation program in order to improve self esteem, decision-making and their responsibility is improved to organize own plan, the social rehabilitation was included aftercare and relapse prevention program within their community and the family therapy is organized to share information and understanding to the family of drug addict aimed to reduce the discrimination within their community and able to provide the support to the drug user or addict that led drug user and drug addict change their behavior. DARAC organized the treatment/detoxification and rehabilitation program to respond to the needs and does it as a voluntary and compulsory treatment/detoxification program to relief physical and psychological pain and to change from the difficult condition to become for the better.

The staffs of Drug Addict Relief Association of Cambodia (DARAC) consist of 22 staff of which 8 are female. All staffs are Cambodian of which 3 are former drug addicts. Staff included a director, a coordinator, technical advisor, doctor, medical assistant, nurses, social workers, administrative staff, cooks and guides to process the program that working in the Phnom Penh city in the community and based in the treatment/detoxification and social rehabilitation center. DARAC team works in the communities around Phnom Penh city as a main activity and in the center, the drug addicts were sent by their families from different provinces and Phnom Penh city around Cambodia. DARAC has accepted 25 drug addicts an average in a month to provide treatment/detoxification, an average 35 drug addicts and drug users in a month received social rehabilitation services and 27 drug addicts are provided aftercare within their communities and at least 2 sessions of family therapy had organized in order to improve the understanding of the family members.

Mission:
Drug Addict Relief Association of Cambodia (DARAC) reaches out to the drug user populations in the communities and accepts them into the treatment/detoxification and social rehabilitation program to provide support, education, improve life skills and reduce risk, improve longevity and quality of life.

Vision:
Drug Addict Relief Association of Cambodia (DARAC) provides the treatment/detoxification and social support to the drug user and addicts in Cambodia increasing self-understanding and develops individual, family and community capacity.

Goal: Is to reach the point that makes the drug user and addict in the community and population at risk to change their behavior and life better with sustainability in life of individual, family and community.

Objectives: Is to helping to the drug user and drug addict free from drug use, develops their capacity, develop their life skills, to reduce the social problem and high risk of HIV/AIDS transmission related to drug use and poverty reduction.

  3. Adult population are drug user or addict (Phnom Penh and provinces)

Program Details:
1-Treatment/detoxification:
Drug Addict Relief Association of Cambodia (DARAC)’s treatment/detoxification program accepts drug addict from other provinces and around Phnom Penh who is volunteer and was brought by family into the treatment/detoxification program of DARAC, treatment/detoxification program provides medical care to relief the physical and emotional pain and clean the substances from the body, treatment/detoxification center has 50 capacity of place for drug addict stay for treatment/detoxification services in the period of 1 months. This included meals / foods, hygiene and facilities were provided. The treatment /detoxification is provided to the drug addict is depend on the symptomatic (symptomatic treatment). An average of 25 drug addicts / 6 females received symptomatic treatment in a month and there is 1 doctor, 1 medical assistant and 2 nurses included social workers working in the treatment program of DARAC.

2-Social rehabilitation:
Drug Addict Relief Association of Cambodia (DARAC)’s social rehabilitation program was organized for drug user and drug addict to attend and is a part of psychological support to develop self-esteem, decision making and self responsibility through individual counseling and group discussion that lead all drug victims able to organize their future plan, the social rehabilitation program included vocational training program to provide them skill training such as computer literacy, beauty skill, electronic, moto and car repairing, and entertainment included sports and exercises, TV, reading, story telling, gardening, cleaning, and share responsibility in order to increase self confident and life skills. An average of 56 drug addicts and drug users / 13 females in a period of 6 months received social rehabilitation services, this phase is was organized after the one month from the treatment phase.

3-Aftercare:
Drug Addict Relief Association of Cambodia (DARAC)’s aftercare program is organized after reintegrated the former drug addict and drug users into the society in order to develop the capacity of former drug user and drug users to keep ongoing free from drug use, an average 15 drug addicts received the support and counseling to reinforce their capacity, and reinforce the sustainability of behavior change and able to change their life-style for the better. The program organized the lapse and relapse prevention, Lapse refers to the initial episode of other drug use following a period of recovery or abstinence. It may or may not lead to full blown relapse.

DARAC’s treatment programs have more graduates at any given time to keep up a specialized aftercare service.
- Clients who do complete primary treatment are given little education about what difficulties lie ahead and are in a hurry to finish the program.
- Staff provides counseling on a follow-up basis resulting to possible early termination from treatment.
